My take is that first of all it's Hollywood they have to church everything up. No but really everyone already know the basic story. There was a big ship it sailed in real cold water it hit an ice berg and sank. Now does that sound like a three hour plot people would pay 8 dollars to see over and over again and cry every time? I think not!!! They added the love story cause they wanted to make millions of dollars and it worked. Besides most people love getting a history lesson without it feeling like one.

In the movie, they wanted to put a story behind the Titanic. Because without it, the movie would be like a documentary. And for some people, a love story with a "Romeo and Juliet" kind of story, its more exciting. But if you want something without a love story, get the other movie version starring Catherine Zeta Jones.

The movie was actually just that: a love story. The Titanic itself was used only as the backdrop/setting.

Because everyone knows how the story ends. The ship sinks. So that's not going to draw people. It's the human interest aspect that sells the movie.

Because it was a the history base on the point of view of two lovers.
And, no one is going to watch the history on it's own, so why not make it a tragedy?

Because the characters of Jack and Rose, being that jack dies, create an "emotional doorway," so audiences can grasp the real tragedy of the Titanic, and apparently it worked, everyone cries at the end, when Jack dies.

Simple. Everyone knows you have to spruce up history to get people to watch it. What better way than to add a love story to one of the most tramatic events of the early 20th Century.

Because, jus the history of what happened would attract audiences enough, and the emotional idea of splitting two lovers apart through the tradgey made it more meotional and more popular.
