how do i make sure a buyer on classifieds is legitimate?

Only accept payment in cash.

All other forms of payment can be forged, stolen, or illegitimate.

If they won't pay in cash, then take a bank check or cashier's check and cash it at their bank. Don't release the item until the cash is in your hand.

Have them pay via PayPal is the quickest.

Or have them send you a money order or check. If they send you a check then let them know that you will not send the product until the check clears.
