In baseball, you have to run if you hit the ball but there is no such compulsion in cricket. After hitting the ball or without, if you get to the other end of the pitch before the fielder picks the ball up, only then you get a run and if the fielder hits the stumps with the ball before you get to the other end, then you are out. Like in baseball, if you hit the ball and fielder catches it then also you are out. A home run in baseball terms will be six runs in cricket. If the ball hits the fence along the ground then you get four runs. If you still want to know more, click the link below

You don't have to run, I mean there is no rule stating that. So if for some teams they want to keep a particular batsman on strike they may chose to not run after hitting a ball. But usually a batsman runs when he hits the ball and sees an opportunity to run without himself or the non-striker getting run out.

If you are sure the ball will reach the fence or six, then you don't need to run. Otherwise it is your wish to take a single or double or a triple.

If the ball crosses over the boundary, batsman need not run.
Otherwise he has to run to get the runs. If he does not run and if the ball does not cross the boundary, Batsman will not get any run.

It depends on who's ball you hit...
The BIGGER the opposing player, the FASTER I'd run.
Out of shape? Then finish him off by simply whacking his other one.
Hope this helped.
