"life is like a box of chocolates"... is a SIMILE. Figurative comparisons using like or as are similes. Metaphors do not use these words.

Ask yourself what your life is like in prose. Describe it first. THEN apply a simile to it. Asking us how our lives are metaphorically will not help you in your assignment because our lives are our own. I trust my existence and experiences are vastly different from yours.

Well, nobody else's metaphor would apply to you. Only you know your life.
Mine would probably be Every Rose has it's Thorn, since most of my life is really beautiful, but even the beautiful stuff has downsides sometimes.

I get a little ocd some(most) times and believe the saying that best describes me is:
"Everything in its place and a place for everything."

I think for you,
"He was a ship lost at sea"
is appropriate.
