Does it have to be a hotel? I always stay at the International Student House (not sure if there are any age restrictions but I was 30 last trip). Nice place, quiet rooms and I have always ended up in a 4-bed room by myself. Recall price around 18 pound per night and right in London on Portland St.

If not interested in hostels, here is a site with some inexpensive B&B possibilities:

The range is huge. You can get a budget place, small room with shared bathroom, for as little as $80 or so a night. Or you can stay at my favorite hotel, the Landmark in Marylebone, and pay $480 a night for their smallest room. There are lots of options in between those two, and even a few lower or higher than those :)
The typical "Holiday Inn" (there are at least 2 in London) standard room goes for about $150 a night, sometimes you can find a better deal on the web at the hotel's site.

You can get a cheap hotel at £70 pppn up to £1000 pppn, depends what you want. Better alternative is head over towards edgeware road and you can get a B&B just off the edgeware road for £35 pppn
