People only hate the ACLU when the ACLU is fighting for a cause they hate.
The ACLU's primary purpose is to keep our government from taking away our constitutional rights. And that means they have to fight even for the people and causes you don't like.
But you would love them if they fought for you. I think their contribution to the battle against the government's infringment of my basic rights is admirable and I hope they are still around if I ever need them.

The ACLU not only hates Christians, but Jews, and Americans. They have used the court system to destroy traditional values and belief systems. Thank God Americans are starting to wake up. I am very impressed with the number of people just on this venue who actually understand this issue. Well done respondents.
God Love you. GO USA!!!!!

The ACLU is a non-partisan organization that defends people's rights. The fact that they're coming under so much fire from the right lately only serves as further proof that the Republicans want to deprive us of our Consitutional rights. I say thank God for the ACLU, because without them we'd be living in even more of a police state than we're in already.

I have always wondered that my self. Seems to me instead of doing good things for people, they are always stiring up trouble. But, I am under the impression that they do stand behind American people that get into trouble in foreign countries where they may be facing an excessively harsh punishment or a death sentence for a penny anney offense that wouldn't warrant that kind of treatment in the States.

If you don't like living in a free country, with a Bill of Rights prohibiting the government from forcing a religion on you or preventing you from speaking your mind, or petitioning the government to redress grievances, no good, I suppose.
But then you should move to a country where citizens have no rights, rather than fighting the people who defend people's rights.

Let's see... when loyal Japanese-Americans were trying to join the military to fight for their country in WWII and were instead being sent to internment camps, the ACLU was there to stand up and tell the government that they were being racist. (Hirabayashi v USA)
When American citizens were being held without charge, without a lawyer, and without any recourse for long periods, the ACLU was there to fight for the rights of the unjustly imprisoned. (Miranda v Arizona)
And right now, they are fighting to defeat the Patriot Act, which would let any law enforcement agency access any of your private records, tap your phone lines, and otherwise strip you of all right to keep your private life private, without cause or warrant, and even prevents those who have been forced to reveal those records from telling anyone under pain of imprisonment. Which means that any cop you piss off under the current law can force your doctor to give them your medical records, your pastor to tell them how much money you tithe to the church (if any), your librarian to tell them what books you checked out when... and not a one of them could warn you that the cops were looking into you or even tell the media that the cops were abusing their power without going to jail themselves.

They make a marvelous bad example.
They annoy a lot of conservatives into voting (for conservatives)
They remind us just how crazy the far left can get.
They are the proof than human beings are devolving.

first off, all you people who hate the ACLU are idiots. if it wasn't for groups like them the governemnt would've taken our rights by now. and second, the ACLU is there to defend people's constitutional rights.

How would you propose that people who cannot afford to pay thosuands of dollars for legal assistance protect their constitutional rights when they are being violated? Or do you believe in a system that only the rich should have access to the courts when they believe their constitutional rights are being violated?
