Gandhiji was a multi-faceted personality. He was all for ethics in personal and public life. For him, to achieve the ends, the means also should justify the end. Hence, ahimsa, truthfulness are relevant in fighting the enemy. Fight without rancour towards the enemy. This was a fresh concept which confounded his political enemies. He succeeded in his fight with the Englishmen. But, he proved to be a failure with his own countrymen. He earnestly wished all his countrymen, without any difference of religion, caste and creed should live together, in the free India. When the Muslim League was adamant about their demand for Partition, he pleaded with the Congress leaders, to allow the ML to form the Interim Government. None in the Congress agreed. On the eve of Independence, every body in India ignored him. There were many who were after his blood. And of course, he shed his blood, for the sake of the ideals that he stood for. Now, we realise how sagacious he was. Partition has not only the country territorially but divided the two religions psychologically, in a manner in which both of them cannot reconcile their differences for ever. Pakistan remains as a thorn in the flesh of India. And for the Muslims in India they have to always live in fear of being suspected for being unpatriotic.

As others have mentioned, for a long time he fought British rule of India through non-violent civil disobedience (disobeying unjust laws to highlight their injustice).

For example, the British had a law against people getting their own salt, because they profited by selling salt. So Gandhi walked the length of India, gathering followers along the way, to the Indian Ocean, where he made a pocket in the sand, for ocean water to evaporate, leaving salt.

This violated the law in a non-violent way, publicising the injustice of the law and inspiring other Indians.

He was a truly great man. (He was influenced by Henry David Thoreau, and in turn influenced Martin Luther King.)
