The key word here is "castle". The ruler in a castle is the King (or queen), right? Well, it's important for a man - let's say just some bloke who picks stock in a warehouse - to have someplace where HE is in charge. He pays the bills, works hard, takes care of his family - and by God! His home is HIS CASTLE!

That everyone's home is as important to them as a castle is to a king. That even the smallest of houses is still someone's castle because it's theirs.

It is a strange oxymoron isnt it. How can a man be kind and loving to some and hateful and cruel to others. I think a lot of it has to do with idenity crisis. They feel ok with their own but hate the others for some reason alien to most of us. Actually, most ppl cant think like the ppl u mentioned because u need to posess a thought process unknown to normal ppl. But getting to your question. That old saying probably meant that it took a good woman, someone loving, kind, sincere, nurturing and trusting to foster a good husband or good man. And thats exactly what mothers are suppose to do. They are the female its talking about, but not always. Sometimes wives fall into this catagory or a sister or a faithful companion. It sounds silly that a man cant be good without a woman but its just an old saying. Most wouldnt fall for this today because we know more about human nature.

I know this expression as "every Englishman`s home is his castle", and understand it to mean that we enjoy equal rights. The law and the individual will defend this symbol of independent liberty and its occupants as though it were an impregnable castle.

Outside of his home, a man has to answer to other people - socially, financially, etc. Inside, he can do what he wants the way he wants it done, and as long as he doesn't do anything that impacts people outside negatively, it's nobody's business but his own.

Probably because there is a king for every castle At home you may be the king. Your home is your own kingdom, your own territory so you can feel comfortable in your own place as a King.
