I don't think it's a myth. At least all of the men I know don't even own half as many shoes as I do, and I don't own a ridiculously high amount.
Men tend to get just the basics, one or two pairs of sneakers, a pair of black dress shoes, a pair of brown dress shoes, and a pair or two of sandals. They end up with 10 or less pairs of shoes.
Women get all those, plus any fashion colors to complement specific outfits, and we tend to get several styles in the neutrals (black and brown) to wear with formal, semi-formal, casual, and everyday outfits. So it's not uncommon for women to have several dozen pairs of shoes.
For example, my husband has 6 pairs of shoes, while I have 30-something.

What's mean about that? It's just a fact that there are a lot more styles of women's shoes than men's shoes. The average man can get by with two or three pairs of shoes or less: one for work, one for recreation, and one for formal occasions (and some don't even need the formal ones). Women have flats, heels, sandals, etc., etc., in every color of the rainbow.

It's not a myth.
Most men are perfectly happy with a couple of pairs of sneakers, one pair of dress shoes (maybe two if they have to wear them to work), and a pair of flip-flops.

Women need to have shoes that "go" with many different outfits, levels of formality, occasions, etc. They really do *need* more shoes than men do -- but quite a few women I know have many, many more pairs than they need, and also lots of pairs that they rarely if ever wear (once every 2 or 3 years). Don't know why, but they do :)

I buy shoes Constantly! I LOVE SHOES!

But my boyfriend buys more shoes than i do!....he gets shoes from NYC @ 5 finger discount...thats probably why :)...but still everyday he has a new pair of kicks on...haha
but he likes shopping too...which is also weird for guys

probably wouldnt call it a myth maybe just a majority (so i guess its a stereo type)

hahaha funny. Every girl i've known has at least 10 pairs of shoes/flip flops. most guys have around 3-5 shoes including flip flops... if that. Guys just replace them when they are used up. I think it's because girls always try to match clothes with shoes, even though guys really don't look at the shoes. I guess women really try to impress other girls instead...

It's a fact. Look in any man's closet, most is 4 pairs of shoes.
1. boots
2. dress shoes
3. sneakers
4 one more pair of the above.

Now look in a woman's closet. My wife has at least 25 pair of shoes.

Personally I own over 40 pairs of shoes and I can count my husbands on 1 hand.

Women need more of a selection to go with the different outfits we wear. Heels, flats, boots, boots with a heel.....the list go's on and on my friend.

well, honestly, women have a whole different wardrobe than men, we are expected to look feminine, dainty and frilly all the time. Think about it...how often do you find a pair of womens shoes that can go with 20 different outfits? Men, however can get away with 1 pair of nice sneekers, 1 pair of cruddy sneekers, one or two pairs of dress (1 brown, one black) and 1 or two pairs of casual dress shoes..brown or black...women on the other hand are expected to match their shoes with their outfits in a varying swatch of colors....men dont want us wearing all the browns n blacks they wear, the want green, yellow, pink , purple and so on and so on.....flats, heels, closed toed shoes...think about it......

Women need to match each outfit with a pair of shoes, whereas men can get away with a few basic colours.

Then there are high heels, low heels, sling backs, mules, boots, etc., etc.
