I'll use 'lol' if I have any sort of out loud humorous reaction, be it a snort or chuckle, or downright cackle. I just like to let them know that it was funny enough to make me react beyond a smile.

I use lol to be polite, but when I am really laughing I use XDXDXD or HAHAHAHAHAHAHA on MSN. These have their own emoticons and I only use them when I'm actually laughing!
