I keep getting kicked off my wireless network for no apparent reason. The router is only a few rooms away. Could this mean someone's accessing my connection without my permission? I have a password.

You need to understand that whenever you run a wireless connection, encrypted or not, people CAN access it if they know how to. Encryption can always be decoded and cracked. I do not think that someone is kicking you off the connection, although I think I can help solve your problem. Try following the steps below.

1) Update your wireless card drivers for your computer system
2) Update your routers firmware
3) Try again
4) If you keep getting kicked off look on the router manufactures web site, and see if there are ANY issues at all with the hardware you are using, and how to fix them if possible.
5)Call tech support for your router.

The fact that your router is 2 rooms away doesn't mean anything. Even though wireless is affected by distance, but there are many other affects. Something if you are interested is called Large Scale Effects. I would suggest you move router location, maybe in same room but different location. The walls, the material and everything will affect the signal. Your location might be "destructive" were the signal is actually killing itself. Try different locations, and if it remains, then it is a different problem.

Someone accessing your connection should not kick you off. I've seen linksys software and XP fight for control of the wireless adapter.. The result is usually a drop after 5 seconds.. then a reconnection.. then a drop.. etc etc" ... what type of wireless are you using..?
Could be a signal strength issue, antennas integral with cards
may be screened by the case and not optimally located.
Static configuration often improves things over using
Zero Config.
Just my experience with wireless.
Wireless networks are subject to interference from various devices, such as microwave ovens, bluetooth devices, and cordless telephones.
A cordless telephone I think is the worst offender b/c the signal can travel quite far, and your neighbor can be hosing you with their cordless telephone.

this could be a million things - but if you can connet one min and cant the next it could be a power problem, routers when they get less power than the should they start by shutting down resorse - first to go is - youve guees it - wireless
so make sure that you are not sharing the routers power on a plug board give it its own plug

if this is not the answer - drop me a mail

best of luck

there are many things you can do to prevent this problem.
first like the other user said upgrade your firmaware, 99%problem are created because of that. Another reason could be creating this problem is probably because you are away from your router and you're not getting signal.

the first thing you can try is turning your modem and router off for a minute then back on. also disconnect from pc then reconnect. when you are turning them back on turn on modem first let all the lights come on then power on the router.
you can try this too click start-run-type this cmd-hit enter-type this ipconfig /flushdns-hit enter-ipconfig /registerdns-hit enter-type this ipconfig /release-hit enter-type this ipconfig /renew-hit enter. good luck
