It depends on what kind of illness you have. Some respond really well to acupuncture but would require heavy medication with nasty side-effects to treat conventionally - certain forms of chronic pain and heart disease would fit in this category. Others don't respond well to acupuncture, but a good dose of meds will clear it right up - I'd pick meds over acupuncture if I had some kind of serious infection, for example, because the meds treat the cause rather than reinforcing the body's ability to deal with the symptoms.

If you are basically well, but want to feel better, then try acupuncture or other alternative approaches.
This will help to reinforce the body's own defence mechanisms.
If you are already ill, then the body is in crisis and needs the help of conventional medicine. Alternative medicine may help speed your recovery.
With alternatives, beware of products being advertised with flaky science. Go for non-intrusive treatments.

Each one has its place and use.. It does depend on the condition. The difficulty with acupuncture is; if you are not into the eastern philosophies, you will not receive the assistance you would desire from the treatment. Western society is not much into this type of thinking. They are conditioned to, "there is a pill for everything."

A 20 year study done at a prominent NY hospital involving thousands of people, evaluating the merits of eastern and western medicines showed that the best treatment is a combination of both. Not one or the other, a combination of both.

I BELIEVE THAT ACUPUNCTURE IS THE BEST WAY. I have had acupuncture for migranes and it stopped them completely for 6 months. i have been on migrane tablets for years and they dont seem to have any effect on me now. I strongly recomend acupuncture,it is expensive but worth evey penny. You can have acupuncture for all sorts of problems i.e stress, back problems etc...
