I do it for the following reasons:
1) I'm usually carrying a big bag of stuff for uni and there is inadequate luggage space on the bus. Sticking it on my knee is not an option because it's too big.
2) I attract nutters like honey attracts flies, and having been touched by a pervert on the bus before, I'm not in any hurry for it happen again.

Why does everyone assume the worst? I usually put my bag on the seat next to me because I feel comfortable with it there. However, if someone asks for the seat I have no problem moving it. Only once when I was in the other position of needing a seat did a person refuse to move their stuff (a large fur coat) I simply got a conductor and had him ask her if she purchased a ticket for the coat. That was that.

Because people think they're entitled to two seats when they paid for only one. It doesn't matter if you don't like someone sitting next to you, you have NO right to occupy more than one seat unless you paid for 2. You also have no right to demand or even ask that people "ask first". Did you pay for the bus/train? Did you pay for that extra seat? Then move your stuff over and get over yourself.

They pay for 1 seat, so they should occupy 1 seat.

Yessssssss!!! I find this so annoying, or in restaurants, pubs, people put coats or bags down on chairs, making their territory I believe, but I hasten to remind them that "Bums reserve seats, NOT handbags! " - I am getting old and crabby and I LOVE it!!!!

My guess would be that they are uncomfortable with total strangers invading their personal space, so they attempt to keep the seat empty for as long as possible.

I always figured it was because they wanted whatever was in the bag to be crushed. That's why I just sit down on the bag for them. They usually pretend to be mad, but I know I really did them a favor, so I just say "Your welcome."
