I have had my beta fish for about 3 months and lately he has been making this filmy looking layer on top of the water and I don't know what it it. I made it go away this morning and when I got home from school, it was there again. Also sometimes he spits out his food. I have another betta fish and have had him for longer and have never had any problems. I always clean their bowls and don't overfeed them. I don't know why he has been doing this. Can someone please tell mewhatsgoing on? Is he sick?

I think you have a male Betta who is getting ready to breed. This film is the first stage of him making a bubble nest. He will then start to make a matt of bubbles under this film wher he would putt the eggs from his mate , if he had one. Shows you are looking after him correctly if he is coming into breeding condition.
All Bettas take food into their mouth and spit some out while swalowing some.

I have a betta who spits out his food every now and again but thats normal one minute they'll eat and the next they wont want it. The filmy stuff in the tank may mean that its around the time that they are supposed to mate but since they are fighting fish I am not sure whether to get him a mate or not. the film also is followed with lots of bubbles too.

The thin layer of film in just from the oils in the food. You can either do a small water change and take the water from the top or I have heard of people using a paper towel and laying it on the top of the water to collect the film. Either way you want to remove it though, since bettas breathe from the air they need to be able to get to it without having to go through a layer of film.

If it's bubbles just leave them be, its just his bubble nest but I don't think that what you're talking about.

If the film is a thin layer of bubbles. It's likely he was just idly building a bubble-nest. Most males do this, and it's generally a good sign. It's not a sign he's ready to mate, or lonely. Bettas are always ready to mate, and betta socializing is basically smack talk*.

* I generally give my male bettas a 1/2 hour of smack talk a week. They seem happier, and healthy for it. After which they tend to start nest building. Other people claim it's better to leave them in sight of each other. If they aren't battering themselves against the glass and can hide from each other I suspect one is as good as the other.

I have 4 Beta I have noticed this film to. It is not hurting the fish though, And one of mine spits out her food, I think because she likes it soft, and is testing it.
