I support three hockey teams, because I have different roots. I live in NC, so of course I support the Hurricanes. I grew up around Detroit, however, and have supported the Red Wings since, well, forever. I also have strong family roots just outside Buffalo, and the Sabres are usually my number 1 choice out of all three, with Carolina coming in at a close second. Imagine how I was during the Eastern Conference Championships last season!
Basically, I'd go for the team closest to you. Flip on the TV and if the current game is two teams you don't know, I usually go for colors or whoever is losing ( < a come from behind win is fantasticly fun to watch!)

If you watch the NHL, then there are american and canadian teams. The Canadians are the best at hockey, and it's their dynasty, so don't go for one of those teams out of California or somewhere too far south to even have ice! If you live on the east coast or midwest, there's the Canadiens, and the Maple leaves, and the Oilers on the west coast. The oilers almost won the Stanley cup last year. The thing to remember is that every team has players from all over the world, so if you support one team, you're not just supporting the locals from one area.

Well I would follow the pro team nearest too you. I would do this because, you would have more access to seeing them actually play which is a lot more fun than watching on tv. Plus, following a more local team you will find other people like you who find ice hockey fun to watch and who also support the local team. I am from Chicago so I will be rooting my beloved Black Hawks.. GO HAWKS!!!! Good luck.

If you want to watch live hockey take a look at this list:-
http://www.eurohockey.net/teams/teaminfo.cgi?country=uk
I haven't studied it in detail, other than to note that some of those listed no longer exist, but it looks pretty comprehensive to me.
P.S.
I support Panthers - that's Nottingham Panthers rather than any North American team :o) Nice to see another Elite leage supporter on here! Go Phoenix - but not this sunday obviiously :o))

The New Jersey Devils. Because they are awesome and do the most as far as charity and giving back to the community. They are also Big supporters of local youth hockey. Their arena is decorated with jerseys from every youth team in the state.

Well, you've got lots of choice if you get to follow NHL (US/Canada) hockey as it has expanded and expanded since I first started to follow it back in the fifties. It is a great sport - it is so fast that you can't take your eyes off it for a second (though you do get replays if you watch on TV). As for which team - put them all in a hat and pick one!

Support the Manchester Phoenix, I support them.
Alternatively if you're in Scotland why not back the Edinburgh Capitals ?. They're in the British Elite League.
