no bid contracts, illegal domestic surveillance, racial profiling...are these things acceptable during time of war? If so, does this send the message that democracy and american values don't work in the face of conflict? Aren't times of war EXACTLY when we should be living up to our ideals? What's to stop a president from declaring war, for the sake of removing restrictions placed on him/hers by the constitution?

Sounds a lot like Nazi Germany to me.

And we all know how well that worked out.

Well, the debate rages on. 1. I've already talked about the "no-bid" contracts that were bid. lol Of course, take that w/a grain of salt. We like Brown and Root down here in Texas. If you have a cousin he works there. 2. The surveillance was international and more than likely legal. Let the 6th Circuit decide. 3. I'm against racial profiling, with the idea that you can search someone for acting "suspicious". The fact that we're arguing about shows that democracy is alive and strong. I think one of America's ideals is that we're flexible and we survive.

I would like to see a comparison of what is being done now to what FDR did in WWII.

But for the civilian internments, I'd say that whatever was done then was OK now.

I don't believe FDR was a war criminal.

A PRESIDENT DECLARES WAR. THE CONGRESS HAS TO RATIFY. NO ONE PRESIDENT CAN SAY I DECLARE WAR AND SEND TROOPS. WE HAVE CHECKS AND BALANCES. DOMESTIC SURVEILLANCE STARTED WITH BILL CLINTON. LAWS IN OUR COUNTRY ARE BEING USED AGAINST US. WHEN DOES SOMEONE STAND UP AND SAY ENOUGH ? YOU CAN'T USE OUR LAWS TO PLOT YOUR CRIME. WAR TIME POWERS ARE NECESSARY TO KEEP THE ENEMY FROM USING THE LAW TO HIS ADVANTAGE. IN TIME OF WAR AMERICANS BAN TOGETHER. I MEAN REAL WAR. DURING WW2 THE GOVERNMENT ROUNDED UP ALL THE JAPANESE AND SENT THEM TO INTERNMENT CAMPS. NO ONE CRIED ABOUT IT THEN. IT WAS A NECESSARY EVIL. LIFE IS NOT ALL PEACHES AND CREAM. SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO BEND THE RULES TO SURVIVE.

If I have to sacrifice my rights for the sake of this country I will. But If i don't get these rights back when the smoke has cleared I will have a serious problem.
