Is it legal if I make my own image of a charecter or object that exists copyrighted on another site and change the name?
EDIT: What if I modify the charecter and claim "Inspired by so-and-so"?

It depends on the character or object and how strong the copyright is for that object.

Odds are good it would be found infringing, but not necessarily. Character copyright is actually a somewhat involved issue.

If the character is also trademarked, it's far easier to infringe a trademark, and that would get you into trouble faster. "Confusion" is a major thing with trademark, and making a similar character would go against you when determining if the character infringes trademark. Giving credit to the original site would also go against you in determining trademark infringement, as it would make you look more like you really intend to infringe.

No, a court would find the work derivitive. You must have a substantial amount of original work in the character or object to avoid copyright infringement. The only time this would be permitted is if you were writing a critique or a satirical review of the object in question; and then you would need to credit the copyright owner.

It is illegal unless you use it with consent (permission) from the person who copyrighted it.
