When my car is running but i'm just sitting idle it revs up so the RPMS go up between 2 and 3. It revs up usually every 20 seconds, then yesterday it revved up around 6 times and then the car just shut off so the battery light was on? What do you think this could be? What are typical issues with a 328Ci? Thanks!

Idle stabalisation valve is faulty.

It controls the revs when the engine is at idle. What your car is doing is "searching" for the right balance to keep it ticking over with as few revs as possible.
A new ISV should fix the problem.

It may be your idle control valve. That car has a pretty good system for checking problems. Find a shop in your area that works on a lot of BMW cars and has the tool to check the codes. The computer on that car monitors almost every thing so should give them a place to start.

better take it in to see what is faulted. typical issues i see on the e46 (your car) are cam sensors failing. they will cause a rough idle, poor running and stalling. if the check engine light is on then a fault will be stored.

a couple quick checks - check your oil cap. if it's loose or crooked it will cause an air leak and cause this type of problem, also check your air intake boots from air cleaner to intake for cracks. you can squeeze them while the car is running and see if the idle changes. good luck

Sounds like a glitch in the fuel flow. If you have electronic fuel injection you may start with checking your injectors, then the control functions. Good luck.
