The HBO series Six Feet Under is amazing. I just purchased all five seasons and am totally addicted. What makes this show so good?

Gripping.. riveting... poignant drama
I think it's so amazing because although they delve into the characters' little flights of fancy (Claire bursting into song once in a while, characters engaging in dialogues with dead people, etc..) the subject matter is so real and so ... relevant to life in this day and age. I LOVE this show. Every actor on the show is effing awesome, and so comfortable in their roles that you don't realize you're watching actors playing roles. you can let that go for a while and fall into the story. Alan Ball is amazing. American Beauty was every bit as gripping and... perfect.
The characters are flawed, as are we all, the issues are real issues that just about anyone can relate to. (Not to every issue, perhaps, but everyone can find something in there that seems like it's their story.) The writers and directors tell the truth to us, and don't talk down. Somehow, that keeps us riveted.
if you get to a scene where Nikolai is getting something out of the back of his van, and Ruth is asking for time off.. let me know if there is a 2 millisecond glitch where it cuts away from Ruth and NIkolai, and you see a flash of some sort of image of African Dancers. I noticed that when I saw that episode on HBO.. (Must have been summer 2003?) so when they replayed it, I taped it, and there it was. strange. Like one, maybe 2 frames, but long enough to stop the vcr and look at the pic.
OK so maybe the show's so good because of subliminal images that convince us, the viewers that it is soooo gooood.
