They seem to start earlier & get out later. As for the reunion, if you only see your family once per year. I'd contact the school before summer break & tell them your kid won't be there the first few days. Maybe they can give them the supply list & you can get what they'll need on the way home.

Well, I have to say it depends on where you live. If you live in some states, schools are penalized for absences in their evaluations. In OH for example, the state issues a report card for each school. One of the things each school district is rated on is their attendance. (Which is complete crap as the schools have no control over whether or not parents send their kids to school). In the past I would have said, Sure- not much happens anyway, but now I wouldn't say that. If you talk to the principal, some states allow a principal to excuse students for certain activities.
Legislation normally only applies to the minimum number of days a school must be in session. Schools normally can be in session as many over the minimum that they want.
There is a push by some to lengthen the school year. It probably won't ever happen because that would require a large increase in money to pay for the extra days for all workers. Then we would probably have to start paying for therapy for all the burned-out teachers, bus drivers, and kids.
Any chance the organizers would change the date? They have a year to notify people.

I say you take the reunion; the first few days of school are generally worthless anyway. Your family is more important.
Your summer vacation is shorter than mine, but I don't know if it's shorter than yours was previously. Usually it takes some sort of legislation to get them to change the number of school days.

i vote for year round school. they would go for 6 weeks and then have 3 weeks off and it would be continual. there are a lot advantages for it. families could take vacations in off peak times, like october and february, it would be mroe affordable. they would not take so much time to review and the might learn more. my son gets so burned out going day in and day out he misbehaves in school. he's been on break for 1 week and he's like a different kid. oh, and i must mention, by the end of july i will probably be mixing brandy with my pepsi to combat the stress.
