What is the deal with people being so crazy and so ANGRY over the Democrat/ Republican stuff. It seems like in these forums that if you're a Democrat, you're stereotyped as a hippie, pot smoking liberal, and if you're a Republican, you're a war mongering crook.
WHY IS IT THAT THESE POLITICAL DEBATES ARE TAKEN SO PERSONALLY? Even on TV we have these heated debates over issues, and yet in Europe, they can't even tell the difference between our parties!
Of course discussing political issues is very important, be enough with the b.s. name calling, etc. Is it going to take another 9/11 before our parties act like intelligent, civilized human beings once more? All of it just reeks of ignorance and pettiness.

I sure am. I don't mind partisan questions. Political debate can be fun, stimulating and, I think, ultimately good for the country. However that's not what you get here most of the time. You get name calling and outlandish statements made that just irrational rhetoric.

Yea, I agree with you, unfortunately I feel like I have to give an imflamatory answer in response to an imflamatory question. Alot of questions or rather statements that are made here seem to be geared toward sticking in the knife rather than debating an actual issue. And then theres conspiracy theory nuts, people that actualy hate the current president and can't realy give a good excuse as to why (other than its become a democratic party platform) for no good reason,. The political divides run deep in our country and that apparent. But, we have a system based on voting, its a democracy, only change can be effected by voter turn out. But, being older I can tell you thhey are not deep enough to provide the kind of climate that existed during the vietnam war. Then, thousands and I mean thousands of protestors a day gathered in our largest cities. So that tell me its mostly rhetoric and none of the dems are actualy prepared to put there money where their mouth is. Alot easier to sit on here and type LOL

I agree. Seems like whatever one talks about these days it has to be connected to some kind of war (literal or metaphorical) or no one pays attention. We never get to the issues that may be threatening all life on the planet because we're too busy bickering. Unfortunately, I have my own prejudices and believe the filthy rich play a big part in keeping people confused, afraid and angry enough not to notice how rich they are and how poor the poor, and how sick the Earth.

Agreed. It's sad because I generally respect most conservatives and the reason they have different opinions than me, so I like talking to them about issues because we can share or viewpoints and sometimes respectively agree to disagree. But here there are rampant generalizations from both sides that make me sick. Just b/c I'm a liberal doesn't mean I've had multiple abortions, support terrorism, and want gun control. In fact I would never get an abortion, want strong secruity w/o having to sacrifice the bill of rights or constitution and believe in the right to bear arms. But alas, it's useless to try to convice some people here of that.

I wonder how many people in Germany refrained from contentious political debate before Hitler came to power..

Far too few, which is why the peoples of Germany and the rest of Europe are so concerned over recent events in the USA.

Hitler did not openly advocate that torture was justified, or that secret prisons, secret evidence, endless detention without charges, secret courts, etc. were just fine. Instead, he and his regime denied that they were going on. They were actually occurring, but from my many conversations with people who lived in Germany during those times, many people may actually not have understood the depth and scope of what was occurring.
That cannot be said of people in the U.S. today—or of people in the world today-concerning the open justification for torture, secret prisons, secret courts, secret evidence, endless detention without justification, evidence or charges, prisoners being held without the ability to communicate with the world, sent to other countries to be tortured by other governments on the vague possibility that they will “confess” to something that will “help” in the theoretically endless “war on terrorism.”

Can you tell the difference in parties in Europe? I sure can't. I do love to watch Parliament though. They get feisty as hell. Ours is rather dull in comparison.

I wonder how many people in Germany refrained from contentious political debate before Hitler came to power...in China before Mao came to power...in Cuba before Castro came to power...the list goes on and on.

The outcomes of political debate are immensely important.
