Check the fuses.
It would be a bit of a coincidence for all the bulbs to blow at the same time would it not?!

If it's anything like my W140 (and I think it is) you don't need to remove the steering wheel.
The tool you need is something which looks like a wire (about the thickness of a pencil lead, any length) with a 90 degree bend on the end about 1/8 or so. I use a dental cleaning tool myself.
Anyway, the you insert the tool on the top between the instrument cluster and the dash with the protrusion parallel with the top of the panel. Then turn 90 degrees down to grab the cluster and pull slowly. I just use one tool, I pull a little on one side and then go to the other side, and back. Just working it out.

remove the steering wheel.next, use two special tool (L-shape).insert this to the instrument cluster and pull the cluster out. the cluster is hold onto by spring loaded clips.this is what the tools are use for to remove the cluster.it takes about 1 hour to do it.

If my older MB is any guide the instrument panel fuse is blown. Just because a MB fuse looks OK does not mean it is. Check it before you spend time pulling the panel.
