Absolutely not, because if we did the western civilizations will crumble and we'll adopt the short story "The Lottery." by Shirley Jackson as the basis of society. We'll enshrine it in the rule of law, practise it yearly (October), draw a winner on the thirty first and hope we'll get a better harvest in the next season.
Also, since we've gone this far in this debate. From now on we should borrow ideas from the novel, "Lord of the Flies." by William Golding.
RULE ONE: Before anybody speaks or types a conch must be passed to you.
By the way some ideas from the story "Harrison Bergeron." by Kurt Vonnegut would be valid in 2081, where the Q&A leaderboard learders will be wearing headgears that will slow there thinking and equalitarian states/provinces is mandatory.
By the 22nd century the ORION SYNDICATE will be established.
By the 24th century the ORION SYNDICATE will become an interstellar organized crime cartel.
*** trust me it's better if we kept the lottery and have government operate/regulate it than the ORION SYNDICATE. ***

In my state it's the government that runs the lottery. I personally think that lotteries weaken a people, and I don't participate. I don't think the government has any business being in the lottery business, either State or Federal level.
But if you are asking if the Federal government should ban the lottery, then I don't think so. As far as I'm concerned the Federal government already has too much power over too many aspects of our lives.

Sweet Pea, perhaps we are talking here about two different issues. I know what you are saying about the people you are referring to, we have the same culture where I live. The answer to some of this problem is what STEVE has suggested, so that those who are claiming benefits use it for what it was intended for. As for the Lottery, well that should remain a personal choice, the same that applies to many other matters, which some people object to. We all hope that the odd one or two pounds could make all our life's, that little bit better. All the best.

Either that or legalize gambling across the board. Let's be consistent.
I vote to get rid of it. If that money went to "boost" education then why are so many school districts running out of money and laying off so many teachers? That's just a big lie. Lottery revenues allow the real education dollars (usually accumulated through propery taxes) to be diverted to other projects.

Why should the government try to protect you from yourself? No they shouldn't ban it , for one reason gambling will still continue it would just no longer be taxed. If one doesn't believe in something the simple choice is to not do it themselves and not be concerned about controlling the actions of others which have no effect on you..

If you are referring to the US Government, it is not their place to ban it. It is voted on at the state level, so the feds have no say so in the matter.

The government needs to keep its nose and fingers out of our lives. It is not the governments job to tell us whether or not we can participate in various gambling activities that do not harm humans or animals.

governments are very fond of banning things on the most flimsy of excuses. so it is time they banned something with good solid reason to, and that is BAN themselves from imposing their silly/ criminal /ludicrous/ideology on to majorities of people who would like to send them to the moon forever. and leave normality alone for decent folk to live life properly, chimpanzees would enforce more sensible rules than the current bunch of turds we have to live under.

Considering the government created it and needs it for the revenue...it is a moot question. It will never happen.
