Don't - you don't have a virus, you have a trojan!
Also known as spyware, they are different programs, and you need different programs to remove them!
You need AVG Anti Spyware, and you need to switch off System Restore and run it in Safe Mode.
Before attempting to remove malware you must switch off System Restore as back up files will be hiding in there, and it will just restore itself. Go to Start - programs - accessories - system tools - system restore.
Run your anti virus and anti spyware in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads. You'll know if you made it because the screen will be at 800 x 600 and your pc will be slow.

I agree with the other posts. You do not have a virus on your computer - trust McAfee which is one of the leading security products in the world. You do have a common problem whereby adware is installed on your computer. Plus if you have adware, then you might have spyware too. The adware simply is there to advertise various security programs, most of which don't work or contains hidden dangerous spyware. The adware will state that you have a virus, just to make you buy their useless software.
Download and install a spyware program. The best paid programs are Sunbelt Counterspy, and also PC Tools Spyware Doctor. There are some free spyware scanners: SpyBot, Tenebril Spycatcher Express, Lavasoft Adaware. If you do a search on Google, you will find these websites with free use of the program. It is always best to use more than one, as each one works in a different way. Are you also using a firewall on your computer to block out any dangerous and annoying adware/spyware? Don't rely on the Window built-in firewall if you are not. Use the free ZoneLabs Zonealarm firewall.

Ok i see your frustration. I have had much experence in this area.
First thing to do. UNINSTALL MCAFEE. IT SUCKS. If it is doing this kind of stuff to you uninstall it.
Seccond thing to do. install a few of these top grade but free programs.
Ad-Aware (www.lavasoftusa.com) is an anti-spyware software that will get rid of almost all of your malware problems. But it needs some help
Spybot Search and Destroy
(www.safer-networking.org/en/download/) Is the next anti spyware program. It works in a slightly different manner, but it works.
Then download a new antivirus|
AVG Anti-VIrus is about the best totally functinal, totally free antivirus program. You dont have to buy any part of it unless you want to buy the professional version. Here is the url to download it
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/
Run a scan with all of these and then try your stuff again.
It should now all work.
I hope this helps!

If by rebooting you mean a complete re-install of all applications from the disks that came from you computer then the answer is yes. Make sure you have EVERY file that you want to keep copied to CD or to somewhere not physically on your computer. Most manufacturer reinstalls completely reformat the hard drive and start installing the OS and programs from the image that came with you PC. After the complete reinstall you need to install a virus scanner before any other additional programs. If you are infected with viruses then you need to be more careful about what programs you down load and what attachments you open from E-mail.

what stuff are your scans searching? no matter if that's in hardship-free words cookies, those will continuously come back once you visit their website back. Do they inform you they're searching viruses or secret agent ware? some anti-virus classes are picky about operating alongside a competitor. I had to delete the firewall i develop into utilising even as i began utilising Norton, as an social gathering. What different symtoms are telling you that's an outbreak? you would guarantee that's lengthy gone through reinstalling XP, yet which will propose reinstalling all of your classes and then re-downloading each and every of the updates. plenty to flow through till you're particular.

Did you know you can get this thing called a FIREWALL and this other thing called a VIRUS SCAN and this other thing called ANTISPYWARE? And did you know that if you had these things and kept them updated and LEARNED the correct ways to use them that you would never have a problem like this? Did you know it is not just recommended but a MUST? Did you know if you go online unprotected, you're gonna get pregnant!?!?!? good luck to ya and your wallet! :-) 40 bucks then would've saved you HOW MUCH now?
Anytime you download a file, it's up to YOU to SCAN IT BEFORE YOU OPEN/PLAY it!!!!! You MUST scan every file you download FIRST, BEFORE you click on it and open it up. Learn to do this everytime and you will never ever get infected! You can download a file from Limewire or your Grandma, but SCAN it first... You can't get infected unless you invite it in! If you open a file without scanning it then you're giving it permission to release whatever it wants to on your computer. Why would you do this when you can just simply scan it first and make sure it's okay. Boggles my mind. good luck :-)

Well I think you mean re-formatting the hard drive, not re-booting. That is a big deal to format C: Wipes everything away. And will not guarantee the virus is gone. Run another good anti virus and see if it finds anything. AVG (grisoft.com) is very good.

First, let me say this keeps computer repair folks in business. Download avg from the net, and install it after disabling Mcafee. Run it along with your antispyware program, then remove Mcafee. Then download ccleaner and clean it up good.

I've encountered similar problem before and having tried several methods to remove the malware or virus, my conclusion is to reinstall the computer using the system disk.
It saves a lot of hassle & time.

If you re-install Windows, without wiping your Hard Disk, the virus is still there.
If you wipe the Hard Disk, the virus is gone.
If you have a virus - go to http://www.antivirus.co.uk and use HouseCall - that should remove the virus
