a plain black screen with a curser at the top left hand corner? I have tried to install the windows disks that originally came with it but still no luck....... please help.

1) wipe the hard drive
2) get a new hard drive
3) get a new windows disk

The blinking cursor indicates that the monitor is working.
Boot to safe mode (press F8 juut before the blinking dots run across the screen). This may take a few tries. When there, click start then right click 'my computer', click device manager from the hardware tab. If you get this far, you can restore the system back to your last good configuration.

You must enter the BIOS as you power up, and set the cddrive first in the boot order. his happened to me recently and was caused by a windows security update.

sorry i suck at computers unplug your computer from the wall count to 10 then plug back up
