Students should be allowed to have cell phones on campus because they are adults, they have personal rights, and they are living in dangerous times. Once one graduates from high-school they are no longer under a strict set of rules, and it is up to them to be responsible citizens. The times we are living in are quite dangerous. It would be foolish to walk around campus and not have a cell phone. The administrators should understand that. I believe that if the students can't carry cell phones neither can the staff!

I don't have a problem with cellular phones "on campus"; but, as a teacher, I do have a problem with students whose cell phones are ringing while class is in session.
Most campuses may be accessed through administrative phones and the office can relay a message. In an extreme emergency ( a death in the family, an automobile accident) the local police department, State Highway Patrol, or local fire department can contact those who need to know.
A mother calling a student to bring home a gallon of milk, a boyfriend cancelling a date, an automobile insurance agent calling to inform a student their insurance is going to be cancelled if they don't pay their premium, are not issues to be resolved while a student is in class.
As a classroom teacher, my school allows me to have my cell phone activated only during breaks, planning periods, and lunch. Any other calls are placed/received on school phones.

I don't think so. Before college, children don't really need a cell-phone. This is just a move from the cellular providers to get more people to subscribe and they have been promoting younger children to have cellphones. But I think it would do more harm than good.

At college, yes, anything below that... why would they need them? Sure you drive yourself or ride with friends in highschool but what do you need a phone for in class? if your texting the kid the next room over, your not learning and your bothering others. turn the thing off, put it in your locker and check it at the end of the day. if the world is ending the school will make an announcment.... leave the phone in your locker. its a distraction to you and others in the classroom. heck its a distraction in college too, but i cant see a way to ban them there.

On college campuses, that's okay. But not in high school - not needed.
