All hurricanes and tropical storms get their names from the same source: the scientific community agreed about 2 decades ago on several names that would span the entire alphabet, each set would be used for each year, and the sets would be cycled through and repeated every seven years.

They use both male and female names for hurricanes, and of all ethnic backgrounds. It was completely random, the only reason it's so famous is because everyone in the world kept saying it over and over. There were plenty of hurricanes that were just as devistating - but you mostly heard about Katrina because of the outcry after it was through that Bush hates black people. Which is complete BS

For naming hurricanes, they go down the alphabet. It happened to be K's turn for that storm.
