Depends on who your customer is and what your relationship with him/her is. You need to know your customer because you wouldn't greet an upset old lady you don't know as you would a good friend of yours. Even thought they are both your customers. Also by customer are you trying to sell them on something or are you doing customer service and just checking to make sure everything is okay? (That would be the relationship part.)
Each situation is unique because of these two factors.
In a regular retail world, you usually don't know the customer so greetings are polite and friendly but not crossing the line. This is as to not offend them but make them feel comfortable enough to trust you as a sales person.
You find what their need is or create one for them and sell them on your product. You can recommend things but don't bad mouth your competitor's product or service.
Also it is never good to be pushy because people can tell and they don't like that. As long as you know your product/ service you can direct them in the right direction of making the sale. Be sincere and understand their story too.
In the end it really comes down to trust. Customers will not buy if they don't trust you. Are you trustworthy?
