Why do colleges ask this question all the time?
Don't you think it's a little absurd?
I mean do they expect us to be original and creative
I bet all the short responses are the same

Sure, it seems like an absurd question, but it can be an important factor.

During the college admissions process I applied to at least 4 schools of the same caliber. I sent 3 of them average essays explaining why I wanted to come, then the fourth a clever one explaining exactly why I thought the school was for me. I got accepted at that school, and wait-listed at the other three.

Moral: Use the 'Why ______ College/University' question. It can get you in.

For most students, this answer will be similar, and will not factor into the decision. However, there are those occasional responses that will tilt the decision one way or the other.

Schools are looking for students who will contribute to their university -- rather than jus ttake from it. Responses to this question will help them get the right people.

If you don't have a good reason to want to go to that particular university, what good reason should the university have to accept you?

I don't blame schools for trying to identify and accept the students that really want to be there, even if it means that all these school end up asking the same question(s) on their applications.
