The applications that you fill out are usually read from top to bottom or at least looked over by someone that is looking for key points in the application. The online application is usually searched electronically by the key words that the employer has chosen. In this case if you do not have important key words but are really qualified for the job, you may never get a call back, let alone an interview. I know its kinda strange.

Are you talking college applications? One difference in these is that many schools that still have paper applications will give you a discount if you do it online. Also, there is the time difference, as the school will receive an online application immediately, whereas with paper, it will take a while to get there.

An application you fill out is generally on paper; you fill in the blanks on a form using a pen. (We used to use typewriters to do this, but they've almost disappeared now.) On-line applications are much more efficient--easier to get, to complete, and to submit.

Huh? If you fill one out online they get it right away (many companies prefer you do this) while if you do it the old fashioned way it takes a while to get to the right person.
