I have been watching ER this season and in particular the character played by John Stamos. They seem to be building up something with his character. He doesn't like to write up his charts, he goes out of his way to dictate them, while at home he drops one of his medical books only to listen to a lecture on CD. The thing is he know his stuff... he seems to hold his own as a doctor, but the writers are clearly setting up the character for something. Is he dyslexic, can he not read, does he have some sort of problem like that. It seems far fetched, since he was able to become a doctor, what's your opinion?

This is a good question--you're right about them setting up something with Stamos' character. Of course, they try to make it look like he has an attitude problem, but I think you're on the right track with some kind of learning disability instead. When he does finally complete his charts, he does it using a voice recorder that he can plug into a computer to get a printed version of what he dictated.

I think he has some kind of problem with writing. A lot of examinations in pre-med/ med school are probably computerized, so he could just fill in a circle with a pencil for the right answer. And the laboratory write-ups could be prepared using the digital voice recorder. Of course, he would have to have a phenomenal memory for this to work, but they already set that up in last week's episode when he rattled off the answer to Pratt's question and Pratt asked him if he had just worked on a similar case.

To play devil's advocate with myself, though, there is a chance that he just has an attitude problem. After all, he wasn't very honest with Neela--he didn't tell her he's in a relationship. Not very gentlemanly of him!

I was thinking the same thing. He knows his stuff yet refuses to write anything down. Also, even though he knew the stuff he didn't do very well on the tests.

It's probably dyslexia since the few times I've seen him writing charts, it looks like he's doodling, not really writing important information.

I thought he acted odd, but I couldn't put my finger on it, the way he talked into a recorder and all that. Makes sense what you say though.

I was thinking the same thing. I'm sure they're going to go either with dyslexia or illiterate.
