my common sense tells me that capacitance increases as the plates move apart -but this is not true

See my answer in your other posting of this question. The formula for capacitance between parallel plates is C = k*e0*A/d, where k=dielectric constant of the material between the plates, e0 = permittivity of vacuum, A = area of the plates ,and d = separation.
