craig s is right other than the fact that lining up in the neutral zone is called a neutral zone infraction, not offsides

encroachment=jumping and touching a player or being so far in the backfield that it wouldn't be fari to run a play
offsides = jumping across the line before the ball is snapped

The difference between the three fouls is determined by the side that committed the offense. 1. Offisdes: either team can be called for offsides if they are lined up in the nuetral zone at the time of the snap. Or if they enter the neutral zone and do not get back before the snap in the case of the defense. 2. encroachment: although rarely used anymore it is basically the same as offside for the defense. offense can not have encroachment. It occurs when a defender lines up in the neutral zone and remains there at the sanp. 3. False Start: The offense is the only team that con commit a false start. it occurs when a member of the offense makes a movement that simulates the start of play. some examples are, the center moving the ball but bnot centering it, the line men making a movement as if to stsart play, A back moving other than going into motion ot to reset. A quartwerback making a sudden movement to draw the defenders off.

Encroachment is called when a defensive player comes across the line and makes contact with an offensive player before ball is snapped.

Offside is called anytime a defensive player is in the neutral zone or beyond the line of scrimmage (without making contact) when the ball is snapped. This can happen when they've lined up in the neutral zone, or when they've jumped early.

encroachment is when a player(defense) touches an offensive player before the snap and offsides is when a player on either side crosses the line of scrimage before the ball is snapped.

Encroachment is also called when the defenses unabated movement towards the offensive player in the neutral zone causes the player to move from their down position

I THINK encroachment is when theres no false start at all, or even a snap, and the linebacker goes over the line.
Offsides is when the linebacker jumps and then the ball is snapped WHILE he's offsides.

Im almost positive. Good question.
