My 13-month old has been on solids for some time now and I just noticed that she swallows her food whole. I suppose this is contributing to the fact that she's hardly ever in the mood of eating. Is this normal? Is there an eating-101 course for little 'uns?

My daughter was exactly like that for a looooooooong time.....
I thought this girl would never chew but it;s a learned behaviour....so you can give her chunkier foods that she could swallow whole without being dangerous.......but textured enough to give her the teaching tool to start chewing.....
and I assume you are giving her like cheerios or baby mum-mums and things like that so she can get accustomed to different foods.

I also used the baby grinder for along time probably from 10 months till almost 14-15 months for her......
this is what it looks like......but there are lots of different kinds out there so you don't have to get the exact same one.....andnyou can take it with you on the go......and grind up the toddler food for her. That's what we did and eventually she started to chew on her own.

Don't we all wish! I've had the same problem with my now 2 year old. I got her the micro ravioli for lunches, figuring they are small enough where they don't need to be cut up, she can just put them in her mouth and chew them. Well, my sitter let me know that she was swallowing them whole! I've seen her do it at home, too. I cut things into smaller pieces for her obviously, and apparently that's a sign that she doesn't have to chew it or something. lol If I notice that she's not chewing something she should be, I'll tell her to chew it good with her teeth and I'll show her how, exaggerated. Then she'll do the same. It's my only advice. I've often wondered about it too! So yes, it apparently is normal.

It's not very good, but at that age you probably should NOT threaten her or take her food away, especially if she is hardly ever in the mood to eat.

You might try *showing* her how to eat. Make chewing (even with her mouth open, for now) a game that you both do together. You probably don't chew with your mouth open; she may just not know. You might also try helping her by moving her jaw for her (gently, with your hand) and saying "chew your food" until she learns the connection between the word and the motion, and you can just tell her "chew". At any rate, it should be something *non-stressful* between the two of you, and not involve punishing her.

For goodness sakes, she's 13 months old!

Not only is it not normal, it is extremely unsafe. The diameter of her throat is probably no bigger than the size of a large marble. If she swallows something that size or larger, it would easily get stuck in her throat and she would choke on it.

When she is eating, make sure to watch her and instruct her. When she takes a bite of something, watch her and repeat the word "chew" to her. Show her a chewing motion with your mouth and teach her how. If she doesn't chew, then take her food away. She'll get mad that you are taking away her food, but then you can just tell her if she's not going to chew then she's not going to eat.

No this is not normal. Take her to the pediatrician and seek some professional advice. I'm sure you can kick this problem in the butt :)
