Actually, there would be no problem with a 16 game schedule as all the teams would be able to play 16 games within 16 weeks, but there are three main reason why they have a bye week.

A. To make more money
B. To increase revenues
C. To let players rest.

As you can see, it is about a 67% lean (and probably higher) that the NFL instituted the bye weeks to generate more money. Even though there are the same amount of games, there is an extra week of network and cable coverage of the NFL.

this is not any longer the comparable each and every person year. frequently, the byes ensue between Weeks 3 and 12. a definite crew probable won't have the comparable bye week from one year to a minimum of one year. as an occasion, the Vikings had their bye in Week 9 final one year, and that that they had it in Week 4 this one year.

Have you even been squashed by 400+ pounds at the bottom of a dogpile? I think you would need a rest after weeks of that too... remember, during the week they aren't on the field but they still have practice and workouts.

More weeks of revenue.
More time for the players to heal.
And there used to be an odd number of teams for a while which made it necessary.

have u ever tried playing and practicing for 17 weeks in a row plus playoffs, plus preseason, plus all the off season workouts? they gotta have some time off sooner or later.

plus string out the season doesn't hurt the owners' pockets any...actually they make more...
