Because your first year should be given over to study and making good grades. Having a car make it way too easy to find other things to do besides school work. Once you have established a good study ethic and are making the kind of grades you are capable of, you can consider getting a car to make life a little easier.
This is coming from a man that never had a car while in university and who went through 6 years of university on an academic scholarship AFTER his first year (which he paid for himself) - ME!!!!

Because all of your drunken classmates/roomates will want you to cart them around after a night at the bars. You will be a one-person car pool! The freshman year is usually the one were all the students celebrate their independence by getting sloshed regularly (it's also the year where most students get their worst grades compared to the other three). Just wait a year unless it's absolutely necessary.

I am fanatically against a freshman at a University bringing a car with them.. It is EXTRA important that they focus 100% on their schooling.. It is important all the time to focus but particularly on that first year

Many college campuses have limited parking and may restrict freshman form having a car if required to live on campus.

it depends on the school you go to, and the area you are in, if gas is one thing, I know around me its down to 1.98 so thats not that much of an issue, the big problem is, parking during game day, and parking in the cage, but other than that, it is a nice convenience to have with you, and if you get home sick you can take a quick weekend home, or go visit other friends at other schools
