I just have a few questions, if i were to take a compaq case, dvd rom, cdrom, and floppy drive, and take the mother board and the cpu out of it, replace it with a new mother board and cpu. would it work with the exsisting drives? Are all drives compatible with all motherboards? I am also planning to get a new video card and upgrade the current memeory, from 128mb, to atleast512, preferrabley 1gb, I dont have a lot of money to work with but I thought I would take one step at a time.

You could upgrade your computer if it were anything else except a compaq.

Compaq uses what's called "proprietary" boards - these are boards designed and built specifically for Compaq computers.

If you bought a new MB, the chances are very high that it would NOT fit within the compaq case. You could use these individual components, if you were rebuilding your computer, but you could not use the same case with new or different boards.

Of course, you could buy a new (generic) case. They shouldn't be too expensive. But you need to make certain you don't allow any static electricity to touch any of the components (you know - the shock you get from rubbing your shoes on the carpet, then touching the door knob) - This would definitely destroy the circuit board - even if the shock was so small you didn't notice it!

Good luck.

yes you can replace the motherboard and use the existing drives, drives will work pretty much on all motherboards. Watch out if you are replacing the cpu, motherboard and ram - these date rather quickly and you may find that you have to replace all 3 in one go - look for upgrade kits / bundles. E bay is a good source as well

Make you stick to a IDE motherboard and not sata.If youhave never done this, you need to be aware of thermal grease between the cpu and heatsink. Without it, the cpu will fry in a nanosecond. Try Tiger Direct and start with a good cheap mobo to learn on. Also, check power and make sure you don't overload that little compaq PS.

Yes, drives are generally compatible with any motherboard. You might have to check the RAM though, as some motherboards require certain RAM chips.

Yep, all your drives should work with a new motherboard. The OS on the hard drive wont like all the changes though so you might have to reinstall Windows.
