Well it depends on the condition that led to the malformed spine. In men it is often caused my a missing vertebra. Spinal fusion can often solve the problem but only if it is done right. A major teaching hospital is in order here.

My spouse had her spine fused from between the shoulder blades to the sacrum. She couldn't be happier, no pain, stands straight and out of the wheelchair.

It can get fixed if the person is young enough to undergo major surgeries. The end result will not be perfect, since they may have to fuse some of the vertebrae together. I have seen a person after the surgery with a drastic improvement.
