Read the book "Freakanomics". One of the positions in that book indicates that crime rates dropped as a result of legalized abortion. As poorer mothers began to get abortions, it eliminated to some extent the very kids who would get involved in crimes later on - the uneducated, neglected kids in society. Interesting reading. I'm a complete opponent of abortion, but this theory is interesting to consider.
