About once a week, I get a sharp pain in the small of my back on one or the other side. It lasts for a second then goes away. As I get closer to my period, I think that it happens slightly more frequently.
Has anyone ever heard of month-long cramping?

If you have a sharp pain once a week in the small of your back I would consider seeing a chiropractor or a massage therapist and see if that helps. If it is once a week then I don't think it is related to your menstrual cycle. However, if you are having month long cramping due to your menstrual cycle then you should see your OB/GYN. Keep in mind if you are having sharp pains near/around your ovaries then it is possible that you may have an ovarian cist. These can occur and be absolutely nothing...your annual pap smear can detect cists. Again, just keep in mind what exactly is hurting...your ovaries or the muscles in your back. Heaven-forbid you get misdiagnosed because your doctor didn't receive enough information from you as the patient. Best wishes & Good luck!

Personally I usually get some very slight cramping only right before my cycle. Sometimes it can occur a week before. If you are getting cramps all month long that seems a little strange. You probably want to talk to your doctor about that. It may not be anything related to your period. You could also have an ovarian cyst; could be an untreated urinary tract or kidney infection (these you can probably tell by your urine). Could also be a pinched nerve. As you can see there are many possibilities, again I would talk with the doctor.

I had a problem similar to yours. I had pains on either side of my lower back that were sometimes worse than the previous. I even started seeing a chiropractor for the pain - (he even told me that my back was so out of whack and yada yada.. ) even bought pain relieveing cream and the whole nine yards. .. after so long and a good deal of money.. I blew it off and just blamed it on food or cramps. Eventually one night at work I could not take it anymore it was incredibly horrible.. i was crying and could barely move. went to the doc the next day and found out i had a kidney infection.... So just keep an eye out. Be aware and keep track of what you are feeling, which side, and so forth. Try drinking some cranberry or other juices. Dont drink sodas.. even if it isnt a kidney infection -- sodas can increase cramp severity at that time of the month. good luck
