I assume they are wood? Wood or plastic you should start by roughing up the surface. If they are wood there is probably a protective coating to keep them in good shape with use over time. Once you have looked into doing this you may find that your sharpie method does work. Also if they are wood you could try to dye them. soak them in a food coloring bath. This would keep the natural look of the wood that painting would not. just food coloring and water as wood absorbs water. Be aware if you try this that they will not be color fast or water resistant and you will still have to start by roughing up the surface. Your best bet is probably just to rough em up and paint em.
