Oh wow, tough one. I would go to my friends' house and explain that while you were trying to be funny, had you known his situation you would have refrained from telling such a tasteless joke and you apologize immensely. Good luck with this one!!

Wow! That was really out of line then. There is no certain way to apologize on this one. You just need to take him to the side (away from everyone else) and be honest. Tell him you didn't know and that you didn't mean to offend him. He will take it from there. That is probably a really touchy and emotional subject for him so he probably won't have much to say and he may not be ready to talk to you or forgive you right away.

just tell him that you didn't know that his mom was dead and you weren't applying it to his mom anyway, that it was just a joke that you liked and thought that he might like too. Tell him that you will be very careful about saying anything about mom's around him and that he must have had a good mother that he feels so hurt over the joke.

Just tell them you're sorry, that you were only telling him a joke and didn't know about his mother.
But in my opinion, unless his mother passed away within the last month, your friend was being way to sensitive. Surely he knew that you had no way of knowing about his mother's passing. May be you should check to see if maybe he isn't pulling a joke on you!

Tell you teacher you have to do this and get his/her support.
You need to stand up on top of a desk/table in front of the entire class tomorrow with your friend present.
APOLOGIZE in front of everyone, and say it loudly and sincerely.
Do not make any excessive excuses. Be short and sweet.
For example:
"I am standing here to sincerely apologize to X. I told a horrible joke yesterday in class that hurt X's feelings. I am ashamed and I have to tell you how badly I feel. I like you, X, and I want to continue being your friend. Please forgive me, X."
Good luck.

Let him know that you are sorry for the loss of his mom, and that you had no idea she was dead when you made the joke. Tell him that you did not intend to hurt his feelings and you are sorry for sounding insensitive.

Tell him you had no idea his mother was dead other wise you would never had made such a joke. Tell him your intention was to make him laugh not upset him. I sure your friend will understand

I think that you did no wrong. If you had directed the answer in a manner in which it pertained to his mother that would be a different story. There is mothers day, fathers day and list goes on and on. A person has to live with the fact that their loved one is no longer with them
