I rebuilt a '94 2.0Ltr Zetec and it cost me £55 for the rings alone. I had the engine out of the car at the time on an engine stand, which made it eaier to get at. It is possible to do it in the car, but you'll have to take the sump off to remove the big end bearing caps. Also you'll need to take the head off, which involves removing the camshafts and upsetting the timing of the engine. Once you've fitted the new rings you'll have to replace the head using a new gasket and bolts (Zetec head bolts are single use only - about £2.50 each from Ford). They need to be torque tightened, then tightened a further 90degrees using an angle gauge.
While you've got the engine in bits, fit a new cam belt and water pump (£28 each) as it'll save time and money in the long run.
Borrow a timing tool for a small deposit from your local friendly Ford dealer (I did it and they are good to see for advice too - buy some parts from them too to make up a bit of customer relationship).
Fit a new sump gasket (£15), line up the crank pulley marks with the edge of the sump, fit timing belt and tension.
Put all the other fiddly bits back on...

As you can see, in parts alone it's probably cheaper to buy a second hand engine and fit that. If you're paying a mechanic to re-ring the engine then expect to pay megabucks!!!

Quite an easy job but takes a long time. This job can be done in place without taking the engine out.Needs to have the cylinder head removed and the sump pan.Pistons come out from the top pistons need to cleaned especially were piston rings and fitted in the groves of the pistons.
You would need engine gasket set and piston ring set.New oil and oil filter plus anti-freeze.
Parts would be £150.00 /£200.00.
Garage labour anything from £300.00/£400.00 depending on labour rate.

You might also want to change the Timing belt at the same time.

Engine on these cars get a tired after 100.000 miles.

Motor Eng 30 years experience.

Very difficult to give a cost as a lot of things come into it.
Age of car, Mileage, Condition of engine, etc, etc, etc, It may not be that simple as you may need rebore, pistons, big end and main bearings, gasket set, the list goes on.

Depending on the overall condition of your engine, it may be cheaper to buy second hand or recon.

Simple DON'T!! They never last more than 6months. No human being can put them in accurately enough to mesh perfectly wth the running of the engine. It has to be done by machine, and as the appropiate machine costs nearly £25million no garage has one.
