the doctor told my sister, her cervix isnt growing properly. which can either mean, it has opened, when it shouldnt, or that it hasnt thickened. so my question is, is this an early sign of miscarriage?

It can be, but it sounds like the doctor is trying to explain that he needs to do more testing to find out what exactly and why its doing what its doing.

In some cases the cervix can be stitched shut, depending on how far along the pregnancy is to prevent a poorly developed cervix from opening.

Hasnt thicked, and isnt growing tends to imply the same thing. IF the cervix isnt properly formed it will not be able to shut completely and properly and stretch while staying close, as the pregnancy progresses.

But again, in some cases there are measures that can be taken to help protect the pregnancy.

Your sister needs to get all this information from her doctor at the times of these visits, instead of wondering what they mean and asking elsewhere. Doctors are paid for the service they provide you, and part of that service is giving you full information and establishing understanding for you. Not getting that is paying the doctor for a service you dont recieve. No one hands out money for free, especially to doctors.

make sure next time she gets all her information.

Many people that I know of who have had a miscarriage didn't have any early signs. They usually take place when the person does have a miscarriage. Mostly blood.
If your sister is experiencing blood loss she will need to contact the doctor or go to the emergency room immediately.
She really needs to contact her doctor and have them clarify what "cervix isn't growing properly" means. They should of explained this when they stated that.

Again, you need better information for us to help you understand what is going on. Talk to your sister and get the facts straight on what the concern is.

She should not be dilating (opening) or effacing (thinning) at this point since she isn't due for 3 mos yet. If she is dilating or effacing, how much? It's possible to walk around for a long time dilated for some women. Has her caregiver said anything about putting her on bedrest or pelvic rest? Is she experiencing contractions? What else has the caregiver said?

Has she had any previous children? If you've had a baby before, you never close up as tightly after that.

I'm pretty sure that her cervix should be thinning not getting thicker. Let me tell you that doctors don't know everything... They think they do... during our pregnancy the doctors told us our baby had no stomach.... it had downs.... and heart problems.......ohhhh ya and that our baby was a girl! guess what none of that was true and we now have a healthy SON! If you think something is wrong get a second opinion

Her doctor should have been more detailed about what it meant. It can mean all kinds of things ranging from a major problem to something that just needs to be watched. If she wants more information she should call and demand more of an explanation.
