Formula- Do what you love to do, and find a way to make it pay.
Ask people at your church if they can help you find the job you're looking for. Be clear about why you want a certain type of work.
Getting a job just to pay bills doesn't get you closer to a happier existence, it's a means to an end.
Volunteer on a part time basis. People respond well to those who are willing to sacrifice for the near term.
Career counseling helps, but can be expensive.
Ask family and friends what you seem to like doing. It might be more obvious to them.

I am also job searching. I have been searching for about 5 months! So, I definitely know your frustration. I have been to interviews too, but no offers either!
I would suggest doing more research and identify which companies you want to apply to. You can research online by first typing in your industry and seeing if there are organizations or associations. From there, you can network by attending meetings or mixers. Also, tell everyone you can trust that you are looking for a new job.
Go to a community or alumni career center and get your resume critiqued. Sometimes you can even do mock inteviews. Most of the time it is free or the fee is small.
As for cover letter, try to customize your cover letter to the job...be sure to drop some skills that are mentioned in the job description..for example.." I have 3 years of research experience in the consulting." if it mentions 2-3 yrs of research experience for that field.
Also, try craigslist.org and hotjobs.com for additional listings.
Good luck.

There are a lot of "hidden" job markets out there. You are going at this by replying to advertisements, as I understand, but you are not going after other jobs that are out there because they are not advertising.
Let me tell you how I have gotten almost every single one of my jobs: I printed up a resume and went in to a business, asked specifically for the hiring manager, and gave him/her my resume. Then I would proceed to tell them why they should hire me, whether it be my experience, my great mathematical skills, how reliable I am for the job, etc. etc.....
Then if I don't hear back from them within a week I go back to the very same business and ask to talk to them again. Basically I just bug the sh*t out of them until they finally break down and hire me.
And you know what? None of these businesses where I have gotten a job, were advertising that they were hiring. And they hired me after my persistance.
I would be willing to share my resume and cover letter with you. I believe these are the tools that have hugely gotten me noticed at any employerwhere I have applied for a job. Just e-mail me (celery_is_the_enemy@yahoo) and I will e-mail you back. A good, sharp, crisp looking resume can definitely get you noticed and impress a manager into hiring you.

Send your resume' to places where you want to work. They may have an opening and just not advertising it.
Look for websites for companies you think you would work well and find their Career or Jobs section and look for openings.
Good luck.
