Eid is a special day that marks the end of the holy month of Ramadhan. During Ramadhan, observant Muslims fast and give pentinence and thanks to Allah...it's kind of like the Catholic lent which also lasts for one month and marks the beginning of Jesus's passion (the crucifiction and so forth)....

There are two holidays called Eid. I think you are referring to Eid al-Fitr, the little feast. Both are reasons for a family to get together and eat a lot of food.

Here is the Wikipedia discussion on them:

" * Feast of Breaking the Fast (Eid al-Fitr), or the Little Feast (al-Eid saghir) - occurs at the conclusion of Ramadan and is held on the first day of the month of Shawwal.

" * The Big Feast, (Eid al-Adha), also "The Feast of Sacrifice" (Kurban Bayram) - two months and 10 days after the Little Feast. Animals are slaughtered to commemorate Abraham's sacrificing of a ram instead of his son Ishmael, as believed in Islamic tradition. (The Bible says it was his son Isaac who was to be sacrificed.) Those who are economically able to make a pilgrimage to Mecca do so just before this date, on the Hajj."

The Big Feast, Eid al-Adha, is the better known holiday in the USA among Muslims. It is usually around our Christmas time, so there is a certain amount of cross-over during that season, of rituals, gift-giving, feasting, parties, and the like.
