I'm writing an essay for my college history class and I have to pick a woman from the American West to write about. Does anyone know any famous women of the American West that I could discuss? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Part of the assignment is learning the skill to research and select a topic on your own.
Open your college history book and pick one. Better yet, go to the library and read about the history of the west. Consider a pioneering women from the San Francisco area.
Sacajawea, Annie Oakley and others are the topic for an elementary school report. I suggest you pick a lesser known person yet one that somehow appeals to you for your college level paper.

How about Sacagewea,the Shoshone woman who helped guide Lewis and Clark thru the Northwest Passage to the Pacific Ocean in 1805?

Probably the easiest (most info out there) would be Annie Oakley, Belle Star, or Laura Ingalls Wilder.
