and someone changed the password on my bank account. I have McAfee. What can I buy to be safer. I have not been able to stop constant spam for inverstment and medication. I use outlook express and set the block words but these people get by them. Advise me please how I can stop hackers and get rid of syyware and intrusive e mails

1) I'm assuming you have broadband of some sort, DSL or cable. If your cable/DSL modem is connected directly to your computer, that's a bad thing. You want a router of some sort- these are hardware devices that sit between your modem and computer and provide NAT (network address translation) so that unsolicited network traffic from the outside can't reach your machine. Another benefit of a router is being able to share your internet connection among multiple computers in your home, if you choose. Devices like the Linksys BEFSX41 and D-Link DI-604 work great - well worth the $50 cost.

On a side note, many routers these days also offer wireless access. If you're not interested in wireless connectivity, then don't buy one with that feature and you'll never worry about someone breaking into your network over the airwaves.

2) Go to http://www.download.com and download Ad-Aware SE and Spybot Search & destroy- both are free & better than many commerical programs that you'd have to pay for. Run them both to clean out spyware and adware from your system.

3) Download a software firewall program like Zonealarm, this will alert you when programs already installed on your computer attempt to access the Internet. It's initially annoying being prompted every time your messenger or Anti-virus software wants to update, but once it identifies what you normally use, anything else will set off a red flag.

4) Unfortunately once your e-mail address has been found by the spammers, the barrage is on, unless you change e-mail addresses. Change your passwords on your accounts on a regular basis, like once a month.

There are codes on websites that can get your computer's name, users name, and email address when you open the page. If you create a bogus ID and and Bogus address to cruise the net with, it will prevent them from getting information to spam you. If you are not using the computer, shut it off.

Programs that allow you to download songs use a peer to peer interface, which leaves a wide open door to hackers. Avoid these programs on machines that have sensitive data or machines you connect to your online accounts with. Don't have them as part of you LAN at home and do not leave them connected to the internet when you are not down loading songs.
