If it is old you don't. Clean it and it looses it's value. A cleaned note sticks out like a sore thumb, as the old saying goes. A little note on history, women were hired back in the 20's and 30's or maybe even a little later, by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to wash bills, for they thought they carried germs. It came to a halt after no one came down with strange diseases and it was a costly thing to do.

"paper" money is made from cotton or linen. That's why it doesn't disintegrate in the washer.
Not sure of the best way to wash it. that I have not been able to find yet. It may sound goofy but depending on what the dirt is I'd try gentle hand washing with woolite or use a tide pen. On a very small area first of course.
