respect them more, because you think that they're proud of what they are, or respect them less, because you think it's small-minded of them to categorize themselves like that? (Thank you for any and all answers.)

well as the mother of a skater/punk/goth kid who gets great grades and volenteers to help out the homeless, like one would expect a geek to do, and myself as a half hippy/half yuppy wierdo, I think we should all worry more about how we are living then what we look like doing so. Why do we have to fit into a little box, with a neat little label? why can't we all be just ourselves?

When people put themselves down they just want you to say.
No, your not like that. I heard a boy call himself a geek.
Anyway, he said, "you probably think I am a Geek."
I assured him that people who were uninformed about computers and felt stupid about it called ones who were knowledgeable about computers Geeks. That is to cover their own short comings and make a joke about it.
Our teacher has this thing about Bill Gates and always quotes him. He said, "Be nice to Geeks you will probably be working for one when you get out of school." So I told him not to worry about what people say about you. He seemed real happy about the explanation and followered me around ever since. Asking me questions. So sometimes people just need to know you respect them. All boys tell me they are a jock. Like that impresses me.
That just means they are gladiators in a uniform.

I wouldn't respect them more or less. Just because a person puts a label on themselves does not mean that they are good or bad.

Whether you want to admit it or not, everyone fits in a "category." I would be curious as to why they would put themselves in that category and why they want to be in that category but that is all.

And isn't it small-minded to respect someone less because of what they say they are?

Much less. What is the point to the label unless you just want to be a sheep and go along with the flock. That is a baaaaad idea.

Hope this helps.

I think that all of us fit into many categories. We like to identify ourselves as straight/gay, liberal/Conservative, punk/prep because it makes it easier for us identify other people that share similar interests. I would not think less of someone because they consider themselves part of a group. After-all, we all like to feel like we are part of a group. I would however think less of someone if they treat others poorly just because that person is part of a different group.

I dislike labels. I have issues with a good hearted friend who needs to label everything. It just bothers me.

To quote Popeye: I am what I am and that's all that I am.

But if someone wants to label themselves, well, that's their choice. No question. I think no better or worse. Just don't label others.

It's their choice to identify themselves as they wish - it doesn't make me respect them any more or less

I hate when people tell me crap like that. I don't feel they are convinced of themselves when they verbalize something like that. It is so attention seeking.
